Curtiss Kittyhawk Dual Combo (Limited Edition) (1/48)

This Limited Edition Dual Combo set brings together two distinct versions of the Curtiss Kittyhawk in one box, the Mk.Ia (P-40E) and the Mk.IV (P-40N). The moulding is classic Eduard, with clean panel lines and sharp surface detail that gives both airframes a crisp, confident look once assembled. Cockpit detail is lifted further with pre-painted photo-etch, and the included masks make canopy work straightforward. It is the kind of set that gives you plenty of variety without complicating the build.

The decal sheet covers ten marking options from RAF, RAAF, SAAF and RNZAF units across North Africa, the Pacific and Italy. From shark-mouth schemes to theatre bands and weathered desert finishes, the box offers a wide mix of personalities and operational histories. With two full kits inside, decal variety and Eduard’s usual solid engineering, the set suits anyone who enjoys the development of the P-40 series or simply wants two very different wartime Kittyhawks on the shelf.

History

The Kittyhawk series represented the evolution of Curtiss’s rugged P-40 design, serving with Commonwealth air forces in multiple theatres from 1941 to 1945. The Mk.Ia (P-40E) offered improved firepower and performance over earlier Tomahawks, becoming a dependable workhorse in North Africa, the Middle East and the Pacific. Pilots valued its toughness, stability and the ability to withstand hard frontline use in difficult climates.

The later Mk.IV (P-40N) refined the airframe further with weight reductions, better visibility and increased range. It served widely with RAAF, RNZAF and RAF squadrons in the Pacific and Italian campaigns. While never the fastest fighter of the war, the Kittyhawk proved reliable, durable and versatile across deserts, jungles and island chains. Together, these two variants trace the progression of a fighter that earned its place through hard service and steady performance rather than headline speed.
