The Panther was a medium tank developed by Nazi Germany during World War II, and it was used from mid- 1943 until the end of the war in Europe in 1945. The Panther possessed excellent firepower, mobility, and good protection, and was adopted by other countries as a standard for new tanks in the later stages of the war and afterward. The Panther is considered one of the best-designed tanks of World War II.

The Panther shared the same engine as the Tiger II, possessed strong frontal armor, excellent firepower, and a suitable weight, making it superior to the Tiger tank in both road and off-road capabilities. The Panther's side armor was relatively weak, able to withstand long-range fire from Allied tanks, but vulnerable to penetration at close range. Furthermore, its 75mm gun was slightly less powerful than the Tiger's 88mm gun, resulting in reduced effectiveness against high-explosive shells fired at infantry, though it remained quite effective.

The Panther was cheaper to produce than the Tiger, only slightly more expensive than the Panzer IV. Because it and the Tiger were designed around the same time, the Armaments Bureau and Wartime Production Department ramped up production to meet wartime needs. The Panther's design simplified the armor and transmission systems to improve production efficiency and address material shortages, while the engine and suspension systems remained complex. Ultimately, the Panther's production numbers far exceeded those of the Tiger, only fewer than the Panzer IV. However, the simplified transmission structure led to frequent breakdowns in the Panther, a problem that persisted until the end of the war.
